Are you experiencing a toothache? Find out what you should do!toothache

A toothache can sneak up on you when you least expect it. While it may seem easy just to ignore it, if you want to protect the tooth from irreparable damage then it’s best that you visit our Ann Arbor, MI, dentist, Dr. Craig Blogin, for care. Find out what could be causing your achiness and the best ways to calm it down.

There are many things that could be causing your pain, which is why it’s a good idea to see our general dentist in Ann Arbor. Some issues may be only minor but others could have some serious ramifications if left untreated. Common causes of dental pain include:

  • A piece of food or an object lodged between teeth
  • Dental decay
  • An abscess (infection)
  • A fractured tooth
  • A damaged dental restoration (e.g. filling; crown)
  • Gum disease

Along with dental pain, you may also notice swelling around the tooth. Pain may intensify when chewing or putting pressure on the tooth, or you may find that the pain is pretty persistent no matter what you do.

When to See a Dentist

It’s always best to play it safe when it comes to the health of your smile. Of course, you certainly need to make a trip to our office right away if you notice that your pain doesn’t go away within a day or two, if you also have a fever, or if your pain is severe.

The causes listed above won’t go away on their own, and most will continue to spread further into the tooth if not properly treated. Of course, we understand that the pain you are dealing with could be pretty miserable and you may need some ways to calm it down before you make the trip to our office. In this case you may want to:

  • Try an over-the-counter topical analgesic like Orajel®, which can numb the area and help provide some instant relief

  • Take an anti-inflammatory medication to temporarily relieve the pain and reduce swelling
  • If you aren’t a fan of taking medication, you can also apply a towel-wrapped ice pack to the side of your face that is swollen or painful

Don’t let dental pain do you in. At the first sign of discomfort call our Ann Arbor dental office. After all, a toothache is considered a dental emergency. We will get you into our office as soon as possible to handle any of your urgent dental needs.
