Find out when it might be time to see your Ann Arbor dentist about dental fillings.

At some point in your life, your Ann Arbor dentist Craig L. Blogin, DDS, PLC, may recommend that you get a cosmetic filling. Find out Fillings why you might need one and what the process will entail.

What are cosmetic fillings?

A dental filling is a procedure in which a type of material such as amalgam or composite (tooth-colored) resin is used to fill and restore a tooth that has been damaged due to decay. Unlike a dental crown, the filling will only be used on the small areas of decay rather than covering over the entire tooth.

When should I get a cosmetic filling?

If your Ann Arbor dentist Dr. Blogin has detected the presence of a cavity or tooth decay than we will highly recommend that you get a cosmetic filling. By getting a filling, we can prevent the spread of decay and fix any damage the decay has already done to the tooth.

How will my Ann Arbor dentist place a cosmetic filling?

The first thing we will want to do is treat and remove the decay. This will be performed in our office under local anesthesia to eliminate any procedural discomfort. Then we will use a drill to remove the decay from your tooth. Once all the decay has been removed we will then start to apply the filling. For composite fillings, we will apply the material in layers and then harden it with a layer, being sure to give it a good polish afterwards so it has a similar sheen to the rest of your natural smile.

Silver amalgam, on the other hand, can be packed into the area that needs to be filled without the use of a layer. Furthermore, amalgam fillings don’t need a final polishing.

Most patients opt for the composite filing because it is tooth-colored, and therefore, more ideal and realistic for your smile; however, some people enjoy the durable and budget-friendly silver amalgam filling.

How long will my fillings last?

If you care for your smile properly you’ll find that your filling can last you up to 10 years or more.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of decay, or if it’s just time to schedule your six-month appointment, then it’s time to pick up the phone and call your Ann Arbor dentist. Let Dr. Blogin protect your smile from decay! Call (734) 975-6700.
